Animatronic dinosaurs can be very realistic, but what exactly goes into their creation? In order to make this happen, animatronic dinosaurs must go through three important processes.
The first step in the production process for an animated dinosaur is the fabrication of an internal steel structure. This steel structure determines the shape of the dinosaur and the placement of the drive motor, which is required for smooth movement. Welders use steel bars to create the internal structure of the dinosaur. Modeling the entire internal steel structure can take anywhere from two to four days. After the steel frame has been completed, the dinosaur's parts are wrapped in sponges of various densities.
A steel skeleton forms the dinosaur's internal structure. After sanding the steel frame, silicone rubber is applied to the muscles. Silicone rubber is then added to the skin to form the dinosaur's epidermis. A silicone-based raincoat is then applied on the skeleton, giving the dino a realistic appearance.
